Lyrics

You were meant to get so much more
Than what you ended up with.
Aue e moko, the riches I had in store for you!
I tried to leave you tiki
with paua-shell eyes, mere
to cut down your enemies, dogskin
cloaks and songs,
enough songs to sing the day and night through
and into daybreak again.
So many things were taken
the carvings from our whare were prised off the walls
and sent to strange lands where there was no one
to sing to them. Our words
were stolen from out of our mouths.
But there are things they cannot take.
They cannot destroy what they do not understand.
They do not understand that our reo never belonged to us, that we inherited it
from the tūī and the kākā and the wind in the leaves.
They thought they would smooth our pillow for us as we died.
But we did not die, and we will not die.
We are children of the mist and the rivers and the salt water,
the swamp and the dense rock at the centre of the earth.
If they want us to bow down, they have misunderstood.
Rangi does not lower himself down
except to touch
The edges of Papa,
her love being the only thing
Strong enough to bend him.
You did not get the cloak I set aside for you
but the old ways are returning.
People are learning again
to pull muka from the leaves of the harakeke,
twist it on their thighs into fine threads.
Steam from hau tapu is rising up
towards Matariki now more than ever before.
Some treasures have been lost it's true
but there are new ones waiting for you.
And through it all,
whakapapa whakapapa whakapapa,
tukutuku tukutuku tukutuku
Tuku aroha, tuku taonga tuku whakapapa e
