Lyrics

Children, some of you all I know I've told this story to before
But to those of you that hadn't heard me tell this story
I just want to tell you about a little trouble I had this morning
Children, I woke up early one morning
But just before I go any further
I want to tell you that I didn't have but
Two eggs for my breakfast that morning
And the cat had to go and jump up on the table and knock them off
And Lord, and now they're gone
But I had a strip of bacon in the icebox, children
But when I turned on my gas I found the man had cut my gas off
Just then I went to my front door to pick up my newspaper, children
And I sit down in my old easy chair
But when I switched on my lights I found
The man had cut my electricity off, too
And Lord, I felt so bad, children, that
I just wanted to take me a little ride
And I went outside and got in my 1938
Cadillac, started down the street
But just as I turned the corner, children, my car
Gave out of gas and I had to walk right back home
And my friends, just as I was walking
Through my front door I heard the phone ring
And the only girl in the world that
I ever loved, children, she called me
And said "Clarence, I want you to loan me five dollars"
I want to tell you that I didn't have
But fifty cents to my name, children
And it had a hole in it when she put me down
And at about twelve noon that day I got a letter in the mail
And it said that if I didn't have my rent in by five
O'clock that I was gonna have to get out the door
And Lord, my father's dead and my mother's getting older these days
My friends, I just can't depend on anymore
Children, I felt so bad then I just wanted to sing me a little song
I wanted to sing a song that I had never sang before in my whole life
I guess I would've sang "Part Time Love" but
Johnny Taylor hadn't recorded it at that time
Then, children, I guess I would've
Sang "Somebody Better Come Here Quick"
But Clarence hadn't told Calvin the words at that time
Then I guess I would've sang, I guess I would've sang
Children, I guess I would've sang "I Need To Belong To Someone"
But Jerry Butler hadn't made it at that time
But as I was sitting there wondering, children
I couldn't help but feel the tears when they ran down my eyes
And I just stretched my arms to the sky, children
I said "Oh Lord, why did you make me a man?"
I got to work so hard every day
Sweat till I'm wrinkled and just to make you people a snow little pay
But make her understand that I'm only a man
I'm only a man
