Anguish and pain are tangible emotions in Ali Saffudin’s debut studio album, Wolivo. That’s not surprising when one knows the poetic folk rocker hails from Kashmir, a region that has seen more than its fair share of turbulent times. The singer-songwriter explores negligence, violence and exploitation in these songs while also deftly turning his hand to themes of beauty, resilience and spirituality. There are smouldering rock riffs on “Wadiyo Mei”, “Zehni Ghulami” and “Kab Talak”. The title track brings folksy hues, alongside psychedelic vibes on “Jinki Wajah Se”. And there’s a stirring adaptation of a traditional poem on “Main Nahin Maanta”.
