Cory Weeds
Home Cookin'
Album - Big Band, Music, Jazz
Tenor saxophonist and Cellar Music Group founder Cory Weeds featured top-flight New York players on his 2018 Little Big Band release Explosion, but the follow-up Home Cookin’ is wall-to-wall with his fellow Vancouverites, who are no less smashing. An 11-piece unit combines the power of a full jazz orchestra with the agility and transparency of something smaller, a sound that Weeds exploits to the fullest on a set named for Horace Silver’s soulful title track. Thad Jones’ “Thedia,” Silver’s “Metamorphosis,” New York pianist Michael Weiss’ “Power Station,” the Weeds original “Blossoms in May,” and the standard “Lullaby of the Leaves” are among the other highlights. Pianist Chris Gestrin, bassist John Lee, and drummer Jesse Cahill provide crack support for a lineup of three saxophones, two trumpets, and two trombones. Bill Coon (Weeds’ co-producer) and Jill Townsend provided most of the tight and colorful arrangements.
