Nineteen year-old Sarah Reeves writes tuneful, easy-to-like songs expressing her resolute Christian faith. This alone wouldn’t set her apart from countless other modern worship artists, but what makes her 2009 debut EP Sweet Sweet Sound worthy of special notice is the near-angelic purity of her voice. As a singer, she combines the waif-like innocence of early Leigh Nash with the youthful fervor of Bethany Dillon, intensified by a certain urgency that’s very much her own. More than anything, Reeves excels at capturing the joys of spiritual surrender — the uplifting “Let Us Rise” and the shimmering title tune are prime examples. She slips into a darker mode for “Come Save,” acknowledges human blindness in “Awaken,” and “Fresh Anointing” shows off her abilities as a worship leader. Ian Eskelin’s production largely avoids big rock flourishes in favor of a softer folk-pop sound that suits Reeves’ voice and personality. The music on Sweet Sweet Sound is to be savored for its wide-eyed sense of inspiration.
