Known as the "King of Romance," British balladeer Engelbert Humperdinck has sold more than 100 million records in a career spanning more than 60 years.
• The singer was born Arnold George Dorsey in India. His father was an engineer in the British Navy.
• Under the name Gerry Dorsey, he released his debut single, “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again,” in 1958. It wasn’t a success.
• In 1965, the struggling singer signed with Gordon Mills, who also managed Tom Jones. Mills suggested Dorsey adopt the pseudonym Engelbert Humperdinck—a name swiped from the 19th century German composer best known for Hansel and Gretel.
• The newly rechristened Humperdink signed to Decca Records. His 1967 single “Release Me” reached No. 1 in the UK and No. 4 in the US, setting the stage for decades of success.
• Humperdinck topped the UK charts again with 1967’s “The Last Waltz.” Between 1967 and 1972, he notched 11 Top 20 singles in the UK. In the US, he remained a chart fixture in the first half of the ’70s, and in 1977, he reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “After the Lovin’.”
• “After the Lovin’” earned Humperdinck a Grammy nomination for Best Vocal Pop Performance, Male. More than 25 years later, his 2003 album Always Hear the Harmony was nominated for Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album.
• Over the years, Humperdinck has racked up nine gold albums in America and a platinum plaque for 1976’s After the Lovin’ .
• During the 1990s, Humperdinck enjoyed a resurgence of popularity. He contributed the song “Lesbian Seagull” to the soundtrack of 1996’s Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. In 1998, he released The Dance Album, featuring HiNRG, house, R&B, and hip-hop versions of new and classic songs.
