While globally celebrated as a singular talent on the acoustic six-string guitar, Chuck Johnson is also a composer of avant minimal classical works and film soundtrack music, and a producer and analog recording experimentalist. Active as a member of the instrumental rock bands Spatula and Shark Quest during the '90s and 2000s, he began releasing solo material as Ivanovich at the end of the '90s, followed by another solo project called Pykrete. After dedicating much of the 2000s to soundtrack work and modern composition, he began releasing acoustic fingerstyle albums during the 2010s, starting with 2011's A Struggle Not a Thought. Subsequent releases such as 2016's Velvet Arc mixed guitars with electronics, and he continued this fusion through collaborations with Marielle Jakobsons (as Saariselka) and Golden Retriever (2020's Rain Shadow). The feedback-laced ambient/post-rock album Sun Glories appeared in 2024.
