Louis Moholo was a self-taught drummer whose musical sense as an improviser made him a very sought-after partner. His band the Cordettes took part in the 1962 Johannesburg Jazz Festival, where Moholo won first prize for drums, leading to his replacing the original drummer in the Blue Notes. They left South Africa in 1964, eventually settling in London. Moholo soon led his own groups, including his octet Spirits Rejoice with Kenny Wheeler and Evan Parker, and his septet Viva La Black. In the 1990s, Moholo brought a band to South Africa, and the moving experience was recorded as Freedom Tour (1993). His duo with Cecil Taylor found Moholo's soft and melodic phrasing complementing the percussive whirls of the piano. Active into the early 2020s, Moholo was also featured in the Dedication Orchestra, created to play the music of the South African exiles, and was in the London Improvisers Orchestra.
