A widely diverse, N.Y.C.-trumpeter, composer, and arranger, Steven Bernstein is best known as the founder/leader of the adventurous avant-jazz outfit Sex Mob. Following early work with Peter Apfelbaum and Karen Mantler, Bernstein gained attention as the music director for the Lounge Lizards, before launching his own Spanish Fly Trio. Their work at the Knitting Factory paved the way for Sex Mob, who debuted with 1998's Din of Inequity and earned a Grammy-nomination for 2006's Sexotica. Between 1999 and 2008, he issued four aesthetically linked outings for John Zorn's Tzadik label, including Diaspora Soul and Diaspora Hollywood. He contributed to the soundtrack of director Robert Altman's Kansas City film, conducted the score for Get Shorty, and has worked on high-profile projects with Hal Willner and Levon Helm. He founded the Millennial Territory Orchestra, releasing 2008's We Are MTO and 2011's MTO Plays Sly. In 2023, Sex Mob released The Hard Way, followed by the trumpeter's 2026 ResoNation Trio album.
