Mr. Smith is the alias of Oakland-based underground rapper Jamel Smith. Previously known as Young Mel, Smith started writing on his own in his early teens, inspired by his older brother and Eminem, and eventually became a member of Gunestarz. The group was courted by major-label Epic, but contract negotiations broke down, and the lineup splintered before fame was achieved outside the Bay Area. Smith subsequently established himself as a solo artist, most strikingly so with "Street Justice," on which he was joined by Kendrick Lamar. Originally heard in 2012, the track appeared on Smith's Son Them All mixtape, hosted by DJ Kid Fresh. Smith gradually built his discography of solo releases and versatile featured appearances across the next several years. The full-length Authentic Perception was self-issued in 2017. ~ Andy Kellman
