In 2024, singer-songwriter Sanju Rathod became synonymous with Marathi pop when his earworm track “Gulabi Sadi” became a hit across India. But it was far from an overnight success. Rathod, from the small village of Dhanwad in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district, had been working toward that moment for nearly a decade. Born into the Banjara community, he dropped out of engineering college and moved to Mumbai to pursue music full-time—sleeping at a train station during his first fortnight in the city, and borrowing money from friends and acquaintances to get by. Hindi songs were Rathod’s bread and butter when he started out, and it was only after producer G Spark sent him a remix of a Marathi track that he decided to switch to his mother tongue. Together, they released a series of pop and devotional songs—including “Dimple” and “Nauvari”—which built his following. But it was “Gulabi Sadi” that truly broke through. Since then, Rathod has collaborated consistently with G-Spark, and he describes his brand of regional-language pop as a fusion of “70–80 per cent Marathi cultural content and 20–30 per cent global trends”. Indeed, while Rathod’s tracks remain rooted in his culture’s regional flavours, his 2025 singles such as “Shaky” and “Sundari” push the envelope by combining folk vibes with global genres such as Afrobeats and hip-hop.
