Massachusetts native Chelsey LaRue credits her Samoan stepfather, who shared his Polynesian culture—and its emphasis on music and dance—as the inspiration behind her artistry. Known as The Bonfyre—she chose that name to represent her warm and inviting music—she found a mentor in R&B legend Raphael Saadiq. Within two years of landing a record deal, the singer-songwriter had scored two No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Adult R&B Songs chart with 2018’s “Automatic”—off of her EP Ready to Love—and her 2019 collab with 6LACK “U Say,” included on her 2020 project Love, Lust & Let Downs: Chapter One. Her 2025 single “NO SLEEP” furthered her exploration into a retro but fully realized sound.
