Purveyors of cool electro-funk, The S.O.S. Band were mainstays of the R&B charts throughout the 1980s. They’re best known for their multi-platinum 1980 single “Take Your Time (Do It Right).”
• Formed in Atlanta in 1977, The S.O.S. Band were originally called Santa Monica. They changed their name at the suggestion of producer Sigidi Abdullah.
• The group’s 1980 debut single, “Take Your Time (Do It Right),” topped the R&B chart for five weeks and reached No. 3 on pop. Their debut album, S.O.S., went gold.
• For their fourth album, 1983’s On the Rise, The S.O.S. Band worked with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, members of the Prince-affiliated group The Time. Jam and Lewis wrote and produced the tracks “Just Be Good To Me” and “Tell Me If You Still Care,” both of which became Top 5 R&B hits.
• The S.O.S. Band’s continued work in the mid-1980s with Jam and Lewis (including the albums Just the Way You Like It and Sands of Time) yielded a string of hits, including “The Finest,” which reached No. 2 on the R&B chart.
• After the departure of singer Mary Davis in 1986, they released two more albums to low sales, 1989’s Diamonds in the Raw and their final LP, 1991’s One of Many Nights.
• In 1994, Davis reunited with multi-instrumentalist Abdul Ra'oof and put together a new version of the band that continued touring into the 21st century.
