Phish prove that it's possible to have a successful music career without radio hits and mainstream notoriety. Known for their incredible live shows—featuring extended improvisational jams fusing rock, classical, jazz, and anything else they dream up—the band from Vermont attracted dedicated devotees nationwide that follow them wherever they tour. Phish self-released early records, then signed with Elektra, where they stayed until a '04 breakup, only to reconvene four years later on their own label.
