The California flower children of Foxygen have treated the history of psychedelic pop as their playground since 2005, mixing and matching bright melodies and hazy hues to fit their whims. Songwriters Sam France and Jonathan Rado have never been able to resist a good curveball, as hinted by “San Francisco”, a beautiful, symphonic break-up anthem that still manages to fit in a caustic diss about their ex being too boring anyway. The kaleidoscopic epic “America” finds them skipping through the halls of 20th-century music, twisting whatever sounds suit their fancy and having an absolute ball with it.
