Broad of shoulder and smoldering of eye, Dan Sultan exudes charisma before he has even unleashed the first notes from his mighty lungs. Born in Melbourne of Irish, Arrernte, and Gurindji blood, he made his name with the equally powerful storytelling and vocal delivery of folk songs like 2009’s “Old Fitzroy,” inspired by walking around that inner suburb and imagining how things could have gone much worse for him. That same year, he starred in the hit film musical Bran Nue Dae, making him a household name. After parting ways with his early co-writer, Scott Wilson, Sultan embraced classic soul and rock without quieting his nuanced First Nations narratives—as heard on 2014’s rollicking “Kimberley Calling” and 2017’s gospel-edged “Kingdom.” After lending his rich voice to repeat collaborator Paul Kelly as well as outspoken rap artists like A.B. Original and Hilltop Hoods, he opened up more than ever on his self-titled 2023 album, a reset informed by settling into sobriety and life as a family man. “I was able to exorcise things that were unacceptable and manifest for myself a feeling of peace and acknowledgment—which is a nice place to be as an artist,” Sultan told Apple Music. As heard against the rising swell of “Chance to Lose Control,” he has found a way to document that inner peace as convincingly as the turmoil before it.
