As the first band to sign with legendary punk label Fat Wreck Chords, Lagwagon set a standard for Southern California pop-punk in the mid-’90s. Formed in 1989 and named after the vehicle that unsteadily got them from show to show, Lagwagon specialise in high-octane, witty gems that couch surprisingly emotional lyrics in heavy guitars and the occasional gang-vocal harmony. Lagwagon’s 1998 outcast anthem “May 16” packs big feelings and chewy riffs into a pogo-ready track, while the chugging 2014 track “The Cog in the Machine” proves that time hasn’t dimmed the questioning, yearning spirit that made them a cult favourite.
