Whether as a sprightly solo instrument or adding a halo to the orchestra, the flute has an ancient history. Its range, up to three octaves from middle C, makes it the highest sound in a modern orchestra, which grants it a special quality much loved by composers. Whether languid and sultry, as used by Debussy in his “L’après-midi d’un faune,” or evocative of folk song (Bizet’s L’Arlésienne), or sinuous (Lowell Liebermann’s concerto), the flute has entranced composers for years, and continues to do so.
