Lyrics

The Door
As an old man was leaving the place he'd lived
He kneeled to say a prayer
They were pulling it down for a brand new road
To take us who knows where
When they asked are you taking some souvenir
To remind you of your home
He replied as a teardrop came into his eye
Just a panel from that door
A room may have its memories and a house can be a home
But as I recall within those walls that door has seen it all
This old broken panel it must have seen the day that I was born
As it kept out the rain and the winter snow
Whilst we were safe and warm
In the summer my brothers and sisters played
While mother washed the floor
Then our father would come when his days work was done
We'd be waiting by that door
A room may have its memories and a house can be a home
But as I recall within those walls that door has seen it all
I still can remember that April day I carried in my bride
And through laughter and tears for so many years
Was always by my side
As I saw the silver replace the gold I knew our love was blessed
But I saw her no more when she passed through that door
And we laid her to her rest
As time rolled along and the old man died one cold and rainy day
So I took that old panel and made a cross and placed it where he lay
The songs and the stories he shared with me I'll remember all my life
Now grandpa you've crossed through the best door of all
It's the door to paradise
A room may have its memories and a house can be a home
But as I recall within those walls that door has seen it all
As I recall within those walls that door has seen it all
