I wanna talk about Mother Mabel

Can I talk about Mother Mabel?

You could see her around the house on Monday morning washing clothes

Sometimes you could see her out with the old broom sweeping the yard

But something happened and they didn't see Mother Mabel

And the community got a little bit upset because they didn't know what had happened

They didn't see her in the yards

Neither did they see her washing clothes

And so somebody got worried

They wanted to know what happened to Mother Mabel

So one of the young ladies went to the house and she knocked on the front door

But there was no answer

She went 'round to the window and she peeped in

Y'all know what she saw?

She saw Mother Mabel just rocking in the rocking chair

Y'all help her rock, help her rock, help her rock

She was just rocking in the chair

The young lady wanted to get in so she could see if everything was alright with Mother Mabel

So she went 'round to the back door and the back door was open

And she, she went in, she said, "Mother Mabel, we ain't seen you in a while"

Come on over here, come on over here, my friend, come

She said, ah, "We ain't seen you in a while and we've been worried about you

Say, is everything alright?"

She didn't say nothing, she just kept rocking

She kept rocking in that chair

She said, "Mother Mabel, you sure everything is alright?"

She looked up, ah, and she said this

"It's another new day (I ain't gone)
