Heartmaker

Oh I once was walking after midnight

And I saw a candle in the trees

I could see a ghostly body moving

A man, all shadowy to me

 

So I walked up closer to the shadow

The ghost he didn’t look around

He was sitting working at a table

His work was fragile and profound

 

I asked the ghost what he was making

Are you a master of the arts?

And he answered quietly, so I heard him

No miss, I model human hearts

 

I watched him work away that midnight

With his candle burning low

Saw him shape and hone his sculpture

Watched a heart begin to grow

He held it gently as a baby

He whispered poems to its soul

Then I saw him add a heartbeat

With the distant drummer’s roll
