Our Part of Town

Remember when I drew a bath

Then threw up and fell asleep

You got me into bed

And started cleaning

And on the playground

Behind our house, late at night

They shot a burglar down

I was sleeping

It was the neighbor who saw him from a distance

He told the cops to come round

And everyone gathered to talk about

The stranger in our part of town

I bought a bicycle

Red and black, with old money

And then I totalled it

Two miles from the store

Once I stared at the moon

Jesus' blood never failed me yet

Cargo boat glided by

Then I cried

And when I walked back home the streets all seemed different

Stopped dead in my tracks to look around

And for the first time I became

A stranger in our part of town

Remember the festival

Bagpipes, Guinness

I fell into the water

Nearly drowned

It wasn't the end

Perhaps a beginning

Of a long and unspoken goodbye

Now when I go back home the streets all look different

Young kids are playing around

And people wave from a distance

To the stranger in our part of town
