When covering Dizzy Gillespie’s “Salt Peanuts,” Miles engages in fast figures that would make his mentor proud, and John Coltrane’s tenor solo gives an early hint of his sheets-of-sound style to come; meanwhile, drummer Philly Joe Jones takes up the space normally reserved for Diz’s vocal part, contributing chops full of high spirits.
