Dario Marianelli is no stranger to period-correct soundtracks. The Italian composer has provided sonic backdrops for such time-specific films as Jane Eyre, Atonement, and Pride & Prejudice. Here, the opening “Overture” overflows with a blend of orchestral music from the era and substantial elements of Eastern European folk instrumentation. But on the following “Dance with Me,” we first get a hint of Marianelli’s symphonic innovations. He lets the drums announce the piece before they dissolve into a whimsical upstaging by woodwinds and string arrangements. With darting changes and bursting melodies, “She Is of the Heavens” punctuates the electric presence of the story’s protagonist. Conversely, “Kitty’s Debut” introduces the character of Princess Ekaterina "Kitty" Alexandrovna Shcherbatskaya with sweeping lines and elegant movements that do well to accompany the princess’ radiant splendor. The score’s outstanding composition “I Don’t Want You to Go” is wrought with tense emotions trimmed in Russian flavors.
