First off, the Jerry Miller heard here isn't the one who came to fame with the ‘60s psychedelic band Moby Grape, though both are fine guitarists with a penchant for cowboy hats and shades. Still, this Miller displays so much six-string prowess here that it’s shocking to discover this is his first solo album. As it happens, Miller has been busy for a good number of years burning up the fretboard in several different bands, and this is the first time he’s gotten around to making a solo statement. He’s a startlingly virtuosic guitarist who combines the influences of country, blues, rockabilly, Western swing, and more, in a manner that’s seldom been so expertly executed since fretmasters like Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan walked the planet. From his fiery-fingered licks on the Les Paul–goes–to–Nashville opener “Travis Express” to his Dick Dale–like tremolo and twang on the surf rocker “Slaughter on Roosevelt Boulevard,” Miller’s mastery is always in evidence. Guest vocals by Eilen Jewell and others expand the album’s already-impressive scope.
