Artist Biography
It is an insipid form of research finding out exactly why someone was nicknamed "Bucky," to be sure. But in the case of this Nashville tunesmith the connotation of big money as in lots of "bucks" is hard to avoid, surely something Bucky Jones himself would never deny, not even in a song entitled "You Don't Count the Cost." After all, his business partner, Royce Porter, likes to brag about how their company made him wealthy. Porter, who actually co-wrote a song entitled "Ocean Front Property," wound up owning some pretty slick real estate himself, a home with a backyard landing on Tennessee's Old Hickory Lake, once he and Bucky's bucks were counted from the Porter & Jones publishing firm.
The pair already had a couple of decades' worth of collective experience in the music business when they combined efforts in the mid-'70s. By the following decade Jones was well established on the country hit parade in what seems like an unending series of collaborative groupings. Performers such as T.G. Sheppard, Marie Osmond, Dickey Lee, and Tammy Wynette are just a few who have plucked feathers from this publishing catalog, representing soaring birds from several different eras of country.
As the years progressed, Jones and associates such as Dan Wilson and Bob McDill monkeyed around with clichéd phrases -- "Exception to the Rule," "Alive and Well" -- and came up with the type of twists typical to a Nashville notebook, such as "Tell It Like It Used to Be" and "Long on Lonely (Short on Pride)." "War Is Hell on the Home Front" may be one of Jones' finest works in terms of emotional range, a tale of childhood sweethearts entitled "One, Two, I Love You" his most maudlin. If love is the subject, there seem to be infinite withdrawals from this Jones. Some country buffs may feel "If You Love Me, Won't You Love Me Like You Love Me" sets some kind of record for the use of the word love on, well, a record, but Jones himself deflects credit with "That's More About Love (Than I Wanted to Know)." ~ Eugene Chadbourne
