Artist Biography
This studio band was one of the most popular penny-whistle jive outfits in South Africa in the mid-50s, and released the first version of the evergreen and hypnotic ‘Tom Hark’ in 1956. Although a massive international hit for the group - spawning countless cover versions from Ted Heath in the 50s through to the present day - the members of the Zig Zag Jive Flutes are reputed to have received only $10 each for their efforts, while composer Aaron Lerole, Elias’ brother, received the princely sum of $15 and the added accolade of having his song credited to producer Ernest Bopape. However, that was showbusiness, 50s-style, in South Africa.
