Artist Biography
Gary Burton is one of the great jazz vibraphonists. His distinctive four-mallet technique can make him sound like several players simultaneously. He has recorded in a plethora of genre settings -- including jazz-rock fusion, pop, and country. Self-taught, Burton made his debut at 17 with guitarist Hank Garland. As a session and touring musician, he worked with George Shearing and Stan Getz. By the late '60s, he had become a major force in progressive jazz as a bandleader; he collaborated with other forward-looking artists including Carla Bley and Larry Coryell, and mentored Pat Metheny in the early '70s. Burton is also well known for his duet recordings with Chick Corea, Ralph Towner, Paul Bley, and Keith Jarrett. ~ Scott Yanow
