Artist Biography
An electro-pop act whose flamboyant looks are matched by their irresistible hooks, the British duo Goldfrapp have been cult favorites since their formation in 1999. Alison Goldfrapp had appeared on songs by dance-music stars like Orbital and Tricky during the ’90s; in 1999, she met composer Will Gregory and they clicked instantly. Their debut full-length, Felt Mountain, came out in 2000, and its expansive definition of dance music—which included folk and cabaret—thrilled critics. Black Cherry, its 2003 follow-up, embraced a harder-edged, glam-inspired sound, and 2005’s Supernature tweaked the formula, with the stomping “Ooh La La” becoming the band’s first hit. On 2008’s Seventh Tree, Goldfrapp embraced acoustic guitars, creating lush tracks that had an ambient vibe. They continued to play with the boundaries of electronic music through the 2010s, with 2017’s Silver Eye, accompanied by Alison Goldfrapp-directed videos, bridging their experiments on dance music’s harsher and softer sides.
