Artist Biography
Known for being one of the most famous gospel singers of the late 20th Century, Greg Kelly has been everywhere from the Arsenio Hall Show to the American Gospel Quartet Convention in his long and steady career.
Beginning as a small child, Kelly's deep faith and powerful voice inspired him to join his church choir at the age of six.
Growing up in Greensboro, North Carolina, Kelly stayed active in his church until he turned 18.
It was then he was invited to join his first nationally touring gospel group, an opportunity he didn't want to turn down.
Once getting on the road, he realized he could make a career out of it, and officially joined Slim and the Supreme Angels the same year.
Beginning here, he began recording both with and without the group for the next thirty years, jumping to various labels depending on the project he was involved with.
Offering his distinct, cutting voice to listeners across America, he slowly became an icon of the genre that was renowned for his intense stage presence.
Sharing the stage with countless artists through the years, he also managed to reach a secular audience through his work with people as varied as Little Richard and Babyface.
Only truly going solo at the turn of the century, he marked the occasion with Heaven or Hell, a live disc that showed he could be a powerful force without Slim and the Supreme Angels to offer support. ~ Bradley Torreano
