Artist Biography
Active during the mid-'70s, Grupo Los Yoyi was a Cuban funk band known across the island. They were led by the mysterious Jorge Soler León, who founded the group and composed and orchestrated their songs. Their music was heavily influenced by North American funk and psychedelic rock, and filled with infectious grooves characterized by propulsive polyrhythms, soaring melodies, psychedelic experimentation, and jazz-funk. Grupo Los Yoyi were also notable at home for their innovative use of synthesizers and other electronic instruments. The band released a lone album titled Yoyi in 1975. It has been reissued several times, sometimes in unauthorized editions. Mr. Bongo re-released it for the second time in 2023 in a licensed, totally remastered edition.
