Artist Biography
British duo Guttersnipe play a brash, electro-shocked form of noise rock influenced by free jazz and no wave. Uroceras Gigas shrieks painfully and thrashes away on her guitar, while Tipula Confusa provides a whirlwind of pummeling drums, and both activate space-age synths. While utterly disjointed and seemingly at odds with each other, both musicians' parts fit together in a strange sort of logic, not unlike previous noise rock bands such as Ruins and Harry Pussy. After establishing themselves as one of the most exciting and original live acts around, Guttersnipe released their full-length debut, My Mother the Vent, in 2018.
Before Guttersnipe formed, Gigas had previously been in black metal and shoegaze bands, but escaped from the metal scene when she came out as transgender, due to intolerance from other scene members. Seeing no wave band Etai Keshiki changed her perspective on music, and when that band broke up, she began working with their drummer as Guttersnipe. Inspired by the ordered chaos of artists like Sun Ra and Captain Beefheart, the duo first performed in October of 2014, and released a demo CD-R in 2015. Several cassettes followed, as the duo's live performances received acclaim from the likes of Thurston Moore, Richard Dawson, and Wolf Eyes. Guttersnipe made their vinyl debut when Upset the Rhythm issued My Mother the Vent in 2018. ~ Paul Simpson
