Artist Biography
Jimmie Lunceford led a powerhouse of a swing band in the 1930s and '40s. He and his section leaders' focus was on absolute precision, with a strong nod to showmanship via synchronized movement. Even the soloists stepped naturally in and out of the superbly polished and interlocking parts of this jazz machine. All of this elevated the sense of swing to an incredibly high level, and the band achieved a following and notoriety comparable to Ellington or Basie at the time.
