Love City Groove's Popular Music Videos
Artist Biography
The UK’s entrants in the 1995 Eurovision Song Contest, dance/rap collective Love City Groove originally entered the competition ‘for a bit of a laugh’. Certainly their stylised but effusive distillation of the Stereo MC’s formula proved an unexpected hit in the qualifying stages. Led by Beanz (b. Stephen Rudden), with fellow rappers Jay Williams, Paul Hardy and ‘Reason’, the song, a half rapped/half sung affair also titled ‘Love City Groove’, found favour in the UK charts. It also served to give the competition some unexpected credibility and became a staple of the UK’s summer 1995 pop radio schedules. There was some controversy over the single in the press, however, when runners up Dear Jon argued that the single had already been released to club DJ’s in January 1995 (though this did not infract standing rules). Speculating on its Eurovision chances, Jonathan King commented that the song would ‘either win or come last’. It did neither, managing a respectable UK Top 5 placing. Prior to the group’s Eurovision success the members had all been struggling fruitlessly as musicians, but now found the opportunity to record their debut album at London’s Nomis Studios, with all of the group members contributing to the writing process.
