Artist Biography
British singer-songwriter Mark Knopfler is a virtuosic guitar player known for his work with the rock band Dire Straits and his folk-leaning solo collaborations with Emmylou Harris.
∙ With Dire Straits, Knopfler had three US Top 10 Pop hits, including the bluesy 1978 single “Sultans of Swing,” and a No. 1 album with 1985’s Brothers In Arms.
∙ He’s won four Grammy Awards across the Rock and Country categories, including Best Rock Performance for Dire Straits’ 1985 No. 1 hit and MTV staple, “Money for Nothing.”
∙ Knopfler composed the Grammy-nominated soundtrack for 1987’s The Princess Bride, which included his Oscar-nominated arrangement of Willy DeVille’s “Storybook Love.”
∙ As a session player, he’s contributed guitar to Steely Dan’s 1980 LP, Gaucho, as well as several albums by Chet Atkins, Tina Turner, and Bob Dylan.
∙ Rolling Stone ranked him among the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
∙ Awarded with an Order of the British Empire in 2000, he also has three Honorary Doctorate of Music degrees from British universities.
∙ In 2018, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 as a member of Dire Straits.
