Artist Biography
With her rich vocals and piercing lyrics, indie-rock singer and songwriter Mitski has become one of the most acclaimed acts of the 2010s.
• Mitski recorded and self-released her first two albums, 2012’s Lush and 2013’s Retired from Sad, New Career in Business, as student projects while studying studio composition at Purchase College in New York.
• After graduating, she briefly sang in the prog-metal band Voice Coils while working on her third album, 2014’s Bury Me at Makeout Creek. The album traded the classical-orchestral sound of her previous releases for sparser arrangements and more emphasis on guitar.
• Her breakthrough came on her critically acclaimed 2016 album Puberty 2, which made the Top 20 of Billboard's Alternative Albums and Independent Albums charts.
• Following the release of her fifth album, 2018’s Be the Cowboy, Mitski worked with performance artist Monica Mirabile to incorporate avant-garde Japanese choreography, known as Butoh, into her stage show.
• In January 2020, Mitski released the new song “Cop Car,” from the soundtrack to the movie The Turning.
