Artist Biography
Nick Drake was a meditative British singer-songwriter who experienced major posthumous success after his music was featured in movies and advertising.
∙ Released in 1971, his dusky folk-rock LP Bryter Layter, featured contributions from then-Fairport Convention guitarist Richard Thompson and The Velvet Underground’s John Cale.
∙ Drake’s third and final LP, the intimate and uncompromising 1972 masterpiece Pink Moon, was named by Rolling Stone on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
∙ His album sales increased significantly after the whimsical, melancholy folk song “Pink Moon” was used in a 1999 national automotive ad campaign.
∙ Lucinda Williams and Beck covered his stripped-down song “Which Will,” while Norah Jones has put a jazz-influenced spin on his “Day Is Done.”
∙ Reissues of 1971’s Bryter Layter and 1972’s Pink Moon both entered Billboard’s Vinyl Albums chart in 2013.
∙ In 2017, Q magazine included his first album, 1969’s Five Leaves Left, on their list of Debut Albums That Changed Music.
