After fronting ‘70s rockers Montrose and becoming the scourge of highway patrolmen with his 1984 solo anthem “I Can’t Drive 55,” Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth in Van Halen and transformed the proto-metal icons into a polished pop machine.
