Artist Biography
Pakistani singer Shafqat Amanat Ali sets himself apart from his peers with a unique blend of classical gayaki and contemporary styles.
• Born in 1965, Ali hails from a long Patiala gharana lineage—the ninth generation of his family to perform in the style.
• After graduating from Government College University in Lahore, Ali worked for a time as a music teacher.
• He entered Bollywood by contributing the raw, soulful “Mitwa” to the soundtrack of 2006 romantic musical Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. The track’s chart success propelled his career, and earned him a Global Indian Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer.
• Ali played for a time in the band Fuzon—appropriately named given that, as a keen innovator, he has fused rock with Sufi in his career.
• With several albums to his name, Ali continues to work on solo music, contribute to Bollywood films and tour internationally.
