Artist Biography
b. 4 March 1908, Brenham, Texas, USA, d. 24 February 1977, San Diego, California, USA. Shaw was taught harmonica and guitar by relatives while still quite young, developing his blues style through his collaborations with more famous artists of the day, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Ramblin’ Thomas. Having spent much of his youth travelling throughout Texas, he settled in California in 1934. There he continued his musical activities, appearing on radio and setting up his own club, which ran for many years. In the 60s, he became a minister at a San Diego church, but he was also ‘rediscovered’ during the blues revival, and made his first recordings, in which the Jefferson influence was especially notable. He appeared at folk festivals and toured in Europe in 1972.
