Artist Biography
Joe Preston is perhaps best known for his stints in the Melvins and Earth, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg for the Pacific Northwest’s quintessential sludge-bass journeyman. Active since the early '90s as Thrones, Preston has saved his most earth-shaking rumble for his solo project. Recordings like the SPERM WHALE EP and ALRAUNE, spread out on labels like Kill Rock Stars and Southern Lord, showcase Preston’s love of droning, dread-laden metal. Luckily, the 2005 compilation, DAY LATE, DOLLAR SHORT, collects most of the scattered Thrones material, a cornucopia of throbbing, fuzzy bass and oblique instrumental experiments.
