Artist Biography
Russian composer Vasily Kalinnikov (1866-1901) came from very humble origins in the province of Orlov; by the age of 14 he was leading a church choir. Scraping together barely enough money to attend the Moscow Conservatory, Kalinnikov's music did not make an impression at first, and he turned to working as an orchestral musician. A chance encounter with Tchaikovsky led to encouragement; subsequently Kalinnikov composed the Symphony No. 1 (1895) for which he is best known. Kalinnikov composed a second symphony afterward, but the tuberculosis he had suffered since his student years took control; Kalinnikov died just short of his 45th birthday.
