Artist Biography
Since the mid-'80s, Quebec thrash and prog metallers Voivod have forged a globally influential sonic identity. Their iconoclastic yet ever-evolving palette juxtaposes death and thrash metal with dissonant jazzy prog, elements of psych, and hard rock amid dissonant riffs, quickly shifting time signatures, home-made sound effects, and thundering drums. Their lyric themes are inspired by dystopian and sci-fi imagery, political critique, and keen societal observation. Voivod debuted with 1984's War and Pain, offering a glimpse of the hoary shapeshifting array of sonic tapestry that matured on 1986's Rrröööaaarrr and 1987's Killing Technology. 1989's Nothingface became their biggest commercial success, while 1991's Angel Rat established their global reputation. Voivod won a Juno award for 2019's The Wake and issued the acclaimed Synchro Anarchy in 2022. Voivod celebrated their 40th anniversary with 2023's Morgöth Tales.
