Since debuting in 2002 with In the Halls of Awaiting, the Finnish melodic death-metal band Insomnium have made it a point to push themselves beyond thrashing convention. Although anchored by bassist/vocalist Niilo Sevänen’s ferocious growls, the band have dabbled in majestic progressive metal (“Wail of the North”) and hard-charging, proggy epics (“Pale Morning Star”). Insomnium kicked up the aggression, complexity and dynamics on 2019’s Heart Like a Grave—a neat segue to the 2021 single “The Conjurer”, which starts with plaintive acoustic guitars before blooming into a smouldering twin-guitar attack.
