Led by multi-instrumentalist Neil Hannon, British indie rock band The Divine Comedy is the true love of many an ardent Anglophile. In the early 90s, Hannon steered the band toward an orchestral pop sound, with sardonic lyrics and ideas swiped from highbrow writers. Halfway through the decade, they scored their first minor hits in Britain by bringing elements of lounge music, synthpop, and Britpop into their baroque sound. Eventually, they moved in a harder rock direction, dropping a tad of the sarcasm, but by the 21st century, they returned to their roots.
