From the moment he joined Joseph Kabasele's band at age 14 to his death 62 years later, Tabu Ley Rochereau was one of the most celebrated vocalists in Congolese music. His light, flowing tone and honeyed harmonies were widely admired. He was also among the most influential bandleaders in the country from the late ‘60s on, first co-leading African Fiesta with the great guitarist Dr. Nico, and later leading his own Afrisa International. This playlist mostly features work from these two bands, but closes with a late career highlight from his time in the international supergroup Africando.
