The gauzy hits Bread released between 1970 and 1977 combine the strummed acoustic melodies of the singer-songwriter movement with the subtle grooves of R&B. Some of their pop tunes are well-crafted enough to be worthy of the Beatles, while others are delivered with the fragility of an adolescent girl writing in her diary. Yet, behind the band's suburban innocence is something unspeakably suave and insidiously groovy. No wonder they were the soundtrack for a million basement make-out sessions.
