Both as a solo artist and with his band la Nueva Crema, Peruvian singer Lorenzo Palacios Quispe—better known as Chacalón (the Big Jackal)—used his expressive, unvarnished voice to reach audiences across Latin America. The troubadour infused Peruvian folk traditions with the new sound sweeping the globe: rock 'n' roll. Electric guitars, wah-wah pedals, sticky bass and reverb-drenched vocals gave the Chicha group a modern, gritty edge, while Chacalón drew inspiration from his own impoverished childhood in lyrics that challenged endemic social injustice.
