Jazz singer and lyricist Jon Hendricks occupies a central role in the evolution of vocalese. His voice's ability to draw out and enrich melodies just like a horn is on full display in “Social Call,” which blurs the line between West Coast jazz sway and beat poetry. Also a dexterous scat singer, Hendricks' bustling dips and flights share the spotlight with Thelonious Monk's percussive keys on their 1968 reworking of “In Walked Bud.”
