Rising from the East Coast punk underground, My Chemical Romance spearheaded the emo revolution of the mid-'00s with their massive pop-punk hooks and glam rock excess. But they resisted easy categorization, blending post-hardcore riffs and jerky beats ("Helena") with squealing heavy metal guitars ("Boy Division") and frontman Gerard Way's sneering punk howls ("Na Na Na"). "Welcome to the Black Parade" may be their most ambitious piece, fusing the theatrical grandiosity of Queen with the sublime melodicism of The Beach Boys and injecting it all with plenty of goth venom.
